My friend, the photographer Chris Harris, sent me the work of Bryan Schutmaat, a photographer who traveled the west and captured the post-mining landscapes of poverty and hard drinking. This collection, “Grays The Mountain Sends,” is named after a line from Hugo’s “Degrees of Gray in Philipsburg,” a poem that my book also steals a line from: “The Car That Brought You Here Still Runs.” The photographs are stunning: achingly clear, packed with the real people and places that Hugo loved and wrangled himself into becoming.
